Programs for Schools: Field Trips

 

Living Classrooms offers field trips to local schools on a variety of natural science subjects that complement Virginia, DC, and Maryland science curricula for elementary and middle school (and high school for our boat trips). All of our programs are hands-on, experiential and feature an outdoor component. Please see below for a list of our programs (both on land-based, and shipboard!).

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS:

Animal Architects: Grades PreK-2

Learn about animals, from beavers to squirrels to spiders, that are expert builders. Meets real animal builders, and try your hand at building models of animal homes.

 

Animal Habitats: Grades PreK-2

Learn about the diverse ways animals survive and adapt to their surroundings. Meet animals who build their own homes and explore the fascinating structures they create.

 

Decomposers: Grades PreK-2

Explore the world of decomposition. Learn about how organic materials break down and the importance of decomposition in our local environment.

 

The Desert: Grades PreK-2

Take a trip to the desert, and learn about the fascinating living things that are able to survive this harsh environment. Learn about the concept of adaptations, and meet real animals from the desert.

 

Forest Ecology: Grades PreK-2

Take a journey into our local deciduous forests. Learn all about tree rings, leaves, and roots. Meet animals that inhabit our local forests, and go for a hike in the woods.

 

Geology: Grades PreK-2, 3-5

Explore the world of rocks and minerals! Learn about how rocks are formed, the three types of rocks, and rock identification. Head down to the creek bed to investigate the local geology.

 

Insects: Grades PreK-2

Investigate the world of insects. Learn about their bodies, lifecycles, and adaptations. Meet live insects!

 

Mammals: Grades PreK-2

Learn all about mammals, the group of animals that includes everything from bats, to humans, to whales. Learn about the traits that set mammals apart from other animals, and meet live mammals.

 

Metamorphosis: Grades PreK-2, 3-5

Discover the world of animals that go through drastic transformations as they grow from birth through adulthood. Study the fascinating lifecycles of reptiles, amphibians & insects.

 

Meteorology: Grades 3-5

Learn about the wild world of weather. Build basic weather instruments and use them to observe the local weather and record your observations..

 

The Rainforest: Grades PreK-2, Grades 3-5

Explore the rainforest and meet live rainforest creatures. Discover the fascinating worlds of the Amazon and the Cascade Range.

 

Reptiles and Amphibians: Grades PreK-2

Learn all about these fascinating cold-blooded animals. Find out about the traits that make reptiles and amphibians special, and about how they are different from each other. Meet frogs, lizards, or other amphibians.

 

Soil: Grades PreK-2, Grades 3-5

Explore the world right below your feet. Learn about the organic and inorganic components of soil, and the processes that turn rocks, minerals, and decomposing plant matter into soil.

Water Everywhere: Grades PreK- 2

Students will learn all about water and its importance to the environment. Students will learn about the different forms water takes (liquid water, ice, and water vapor), and they will play a game to learn about the parts of the water cycle. They will also meet local amphibians, and take a short hike to investigate a real creek.

Watersheds: Grades 3-5

Learn about creeks, rivers, and watersheds, and the animals that inhabit them. Explore the creek, hunt for macro-invertebrates, and conduct water quality testing. Learn about how pollution affects our watersheds, and meet local amphibians.

 

Winter Ecology: Grades PreK-2

Learn about animals in winter, and how they adapt to survive harsh conditions of extreme cold and scarce food. Students will learn about migration, hibernation, and other strategies animals use to survive the winter.

 

ADVENTURE PROGRAMS:

Orienteering: Grades 2 to 8

Students will learn the basics of navigation. They will learn about the features of maps (legend, scale, etc.), and design their own maps. Students will then learn the parts of a compass, and how to take bearings (find directions) with a compass. At the end of the program, students will test what they've learned by using their compass skills to follow a challenging orienteering course through the woods.

Teambuilding I: Grades 4-8

Through outdoor games and teambuilding activities, students will learn to work as part of a group, communicate with group members, and use their skills to contribute to group activities. While playing fun, outdoor games like "Shoe the Donkey," "Magic Carpet Ride," and "All Aboard," students will be challenged to complete tasks that can only be accomplished with the cooperation of the whole group.

 

Teambuilding II: Grades 4-8

Build on the skills learned in Teambuilding Adventure I, while incorporating trust activities and advanced problem solving.

 

SHIPBOARD PROGRAMS:

Shipboard:  Grades 3-12

While aboard our historic Chesapeake Bay Buy Boats, students will participate in catching and examining the aquatic life in our local rivers, measuring water quality, and exploring the impact of our local watershed on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. Meets MWEE curriculum standards.
