Discovery Creek Summer Internships 2008

This paid internship will work at one of several summer camps around the Washington, D.C. metro area.  Interns teach camp activities, create/modify camp programs, and handle and care for the animals in the Museum’s collection. Spring and Fall Internships
Interns will work alongside our experienced educational staff and will be trained to lead a wide variety of hands-on activities onboard one of our three historic vessels. Most of an intern's time will be devoted to interacting with, teaching, and supervising students of all ages and learning abilities. Additional duties include maintenance of educational equipment and assisting with program coordination. During the school year, most trips run weekdays from 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., with occasional weekend and evening programs.

Qualifications:
A prospective intern should be enthusiastic, well-spoken, reliable, flexible, able to work with students from diverse backgrounds, and interested in Chesapeake Bay ecology and history. Interns should also work well with others and function productively with minimal supervision. Science background or teaching experience is a plus, but not a requirement.

Starting Dates:
Positions are available from March – June and September - November. Length of internships may vary. the

Deadlines:
Spring interns should apply by early February and fall interns by early August.

Comments:
These internships are unpaid positions. Living Classrooms Foundation can provide some information about housing, but securing housing is the responsibility of the intern. Be advised that the requirements of this internship make it difficult to hold an outside job.

LC-NCR Summer Internships
Interns will work with our experienced educational staff and will be trained to lead various hands-on activities aboard one of our historic vessels. Interns will work with students that are studying the Blue Crab and the Eastern Oyster while on board the vessels.  Interns will camp with students and other staff in locations throughout the Chesapeake. Interns will support the program by organizing meals, assisting students at the campsite, and assisting with educational activities on board the vessels as well as on land.  These summer trips range from seven to nine days in length. 

Qualifications:
A prospective intern should be enthusiastic, well-spoken, reliable, flexible, able to work with students from diverse backgrounds, and interested in Chesapeake Bay ecology and history. Interns should also work well with others and function productively with minimal supervision. Science background or teaching experience is a plus, but not a requirement. Interns must be at least 18 years of age to drive LCF vehicles.

Positions are available from June to August. R.R.

Comments:
These internships may be paid positions. Interns should be comfortable with camping as well as operating a 15-passenger van.
