Click here for National Get Outdoors Day
WHAT: Get Outdoors Day is a FREE event that encourages healthy, active outdoor fun! The action-packed day will feature food (6 food trucks), Mountain bike trails, fishing, golfing, boating, hands-on science, geocaching, face painting and more!
In addition, a FREE Bluegrass music festival will take place on Kingman Island. The Washington, DC area has a long and illustrious bluegrass history dating back to the early 1940’s when thousands of people arrived in the nation’s capital to work for the Second World War effort. They came from rural areas and points south and many brought their banjos, fiddles and guitars with them.
The DC area remains a hotbed of bluegrass music today. Scores of local groups play the town fair, club and festival circuit and the region is still home to some of the best bluegrass musicians in the world.
WHY: National Get Outdoors Day , which promotes the fun and value of time outdoors, is a signature event of “Great Outdoors Month,” the designation given annually to June by the White House and governors across the United States. For the last two decades, Americans have turned indoors and to less active recreational and leisure pursuits. Visits to national parks and other public recreation sites have declined and obesity has increased rapidly among the American people, with significant health consequences, including projections of life expectancy declines of 2-5 years for today’s youth.
WHEN:Saturday, June 11, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Bluegrass Festival takes place from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Six Bluegrass bands and ten food vendors
WHERE: Kingman & Heritage Islands- Parking available in RFK lot #6, Northeast, DC For Directions go to www.kingmanisland.org

A Night with the Nats on August 12, 2010
was a success!

On August 12th, friends and family members of LC-NCR, and community members braved the rain delay and participated in the first A Night with the Nats event. Over 220 tickets were sold to the event and folks gathered ahead of time for a tailgate with FREE beer, snacks, hats donated by PEPCO and tons of raindrops! Despite the weather, those that showed enjoyed themselves and had a great time in our fantastic left field seats at the game.
We hope to do this event in the future, this time maybe with a little less rain.

Thumbs up from Executive Director, John Dillow
for a great night!
