Living Classrooms Foundation, Inc. has provided unique hands-on, interdisciplinary and environmental education programs aboard historic ships and on land since 1985. These dynamic, "learning by doing" programs emphasize applied learning in math, science, social studies, language arts, and social skills.
Day Programs: Shipboard programs are offered during the school day in addition to after school. Students have the opportunity to sail aboard a historic buy boat, Half Shell. While onboard, students participate in hands-on activities centered on applied science and math, history, language arts, and the physical environment. LC-NCR customizes each program so that it fits with the curriculum covered in the classroom.
Overnight Programs: LC-NCR offers overnight camping experiences for students of any age, focusing on many different subjects. Themes include "Chesapeake Bay Fisheries," "Ghosts of the Potomac," "Escape from DC: Retracing a Path of the Underground Railroad," "Wilderness Survival", and "Algonquin Tribal Adventure: A Vision Quest." LC-NCR also works with schools to tailor overnight experiences to specific curriculum or interests, while incorporating history, science, and team-building components.
Meaningful Watershed Experience: Couple your shipboard experience with two classroom outreach sessions by LC-NCR staff to provide your students with a "Meaningful Watershed Experience." Pre and post trip activities will be utilized to assist with preparing the students for their upcoming trip aboard Half Shell and reinforcing topics covered on the trip.
Professional Development: LC-NCR has developed several customized professional development programs for teachers. These programs cover areas ranging from technical issues in environmental education to making your classroom a "living classroom."
Charters: Half Shell is also available for private charter for your next birthday party, reunion, happy hour, or corporate event.
